Keeping Children Safe As School Reopens

With school now back in session, a lot is happening so that students can learn and excel safely. The necessity of having children attend school in person can only be safe when a region has the spread of Covid-19 under control.

Why is important for students to go back to school?

Schools provide more than just academics to children and adolescents. In addition to reading, writing and math, students learn social and emotional skills, get exercise, and have access to mental health support and other services that cannot be provided with online learning. For many children and adolescents, schools are safe places to be while parents or guardians are working. For many families, school is where kids get to play with friends, eat healthy meals, learn about sports, get access to the internet and other vital services.

The pandemic has been especially hard for  low-income families. One in 5 teens cannot complete schoolwork at home because they do not have a computer or internet connection. However, schools are reporting that some students have had anxieties of being back to school in fears of getting sick. If you notice your child acting differently or know they are scared be sure to communicate with them. You may also want to reach out to their school psychologist to set up a plan to ensure your child can speak to someone, can trust her superiors and most importantly can feel safe about the newest guidelines.

Advanced Internal Medicine is excited to have things start to return back to normal. However, it is in important to follow the guidelines set in place by our leadership to continue to keep everyone safe.
